Swim diaper, swim shorts, swim brief, containment brief…The main goal of these articles is to prevent fecal matter from contaminating the water. However, adults and older children who deal with urinary incontinence may still need extra protection both in and out of the water. Luckily cloth swim diapers for adults and youth are available to meet a variety of needs from regular incontinence to bowel incontinence.

Swim diapers are designed to be more trim than a regular diaper cover to prevent air bubbles from getting stuck inside the diaper. For younger children, these air bubbles can cause the child to tip face forward in the water.

For a more in depth look at what swim diapers are and how they work, check out my blog post How to Make an Adult Swim Diaper.

Choosing What Type of Swim Diaper to Use

Swim diapers come either with absorbency or without absorbency. Swim diapers without absorbency work well to capture solid accidents, but do not contain any bladder leaks. Some swim brief options that do have absorbency are usually minimal and not meant to contain a full bladder leak, but can work just fine for light bladder leaks.

If you find that you need absorbency to contain a full bladder leak, you would need to either change immediately before and after being in the water to a regular cloth or disposable product or use a thin diaper in addition to a trim fitting rubber, latex, or silicone cover that fits especially snuggly to prevent any sagging or water to leak in.

There’s actually a really great variety when it comes to combinations of materials available for swim diapers for adults and youth. Another thing to consider is if you want a stand alone swim diaper that looks like a real swim suit or plan to wear the swim diaper under whatever suit you already own.

Cloth Swim Diapers for Adults

1. Adult Reusable Swim Diaper

$32.00

Made from nylon and spandex, this reusable swim diaper from My Pool Pal does NOT have any absorbency. It has a laminated polyester lining with a breathable antibacterial film. There’s no mesh with this swim diaper – it looks like regular swim fabric on the outside and has laminated material on the inside. It is designed to fit underneath an existing swimsuit for discreet protection against leaks without sagging.

Fits waist size 22”-50,” though custom sizes are available.

Comes in 6 solid colors.

2. InControl Swim Diaper

$19.99

A front closure swim diaper, InControl’s swim diaper version comes with hook and loop closure. It also has rise snaps, so you can adjust the height of the diaper to fit your needs and body. The inside is lined with sports mesh and has one thin layer of absorbency. The outer is made from TPU for a waterproof layer.

3. Theraquatics Adult Swim Diaper

$19.95

Theraquatics adult swim diaper is the only one I’ve come across that has an absorbent lining. Made from terry cloth, the absorbent lining is enclosed with a watertight poly outer shell. It works well for both urinary and fecal incontinence. This is a pull on style swim diaper without any side or front closures, so when choosing your size, make sure that the waist will fit over the widest part of your hips.

Sizes S-XXL fits waists 23”-59”.

Available in white.

4. Knix Leakproof Swimwear

$50.00 +

Leakproof/period swimwear is a great option for managing light bladder leaks. These would NOT be appropriate for fecal incontinence. However, if you’re looking for something that can help you manage light leakage at the beach or pool, leakproof swimwear is a fantastic option.

However, keep in mind that leakproof swimwear and underwear operate a little differently from diapers. For more info on that, check out my blog post Does Period Underwear Work for Incontinence

Knix’s leakproof swimwear line has a LOT of options from 2 piece tops and bottoms in a wide range of styles, to one piece swimsuits. Plus, some of Knix’s period swimwear was featured in Sports Illustrated!

Sizes XS – XXXXL

Available in black, lava, tidepool, and a black and white hibiscus print.

5. Ecoable Hybrid Diaper

$21.99

Ecoable’s 3-in-1 Hybrid diaper works well as a lightweight diaper, training pant, or swim diaper. To use it as a swim diaper, you would avoid stuffing the extra absorbency in. It has a PUL outer, mesh lining and thin layer of absorbency sewn in the middle. This small bit of absorbency works well to catch small bladder leaks.

Fits sizes 5-10.

Available in over 40 patterns and colors.

6. Kes-Vir Kids Incontinence Swimwear

$48 – $81

Kes-Vir has a range of swimwear from trunks to one piece swimsuits designed to help manage incontinence and bowel incontinence for kids while at the pool. These have a built-in waterproof swim brief that keeps solid accidents contained. They can contain bladder leaks only for a short amount of time since there is no built in absorbency.

The only option with built in absorbency is a pair of black period swim briefs for girls. These have a light absorbency with a waterproof barrier.

Options fit sizes 3-16 years.

7. Conni Kids Containment Swim Shorts

$69.99

Conni kids containment swim shorts feature a built-in brief with adjustable drawstrings at the waist and legs to adjust fit. Made from thin, stretchy material that is completely waterproof, these swim shorts also have a special fabric that helps create a vacuum seal along the legs. These will contain both solids and bladder leakage – although with bladder leakage it will eventually leak out since there’s no absorbency inside

These come in sizes 4-16 with 3 pattern options.
